Red Hat Society Goes Red in Support of Heart Disease Awareness
LOS ANGELES — Members of the largest growing women’s organization, the Red Hat
Society, kick off the RHS Go Red for Women Program today by trading in
their purple dresses for red. The program, which aims to raise awareness
of heart disease, the number one cause of death of women in America,
encourages Red Hatters from sea to sea to follow the beat and match
their hat to their dress.
Heart disease is an important matter not just for Red Hatters, but for
women under 50 as well. It is a common misconception that the disease is
a threat only to men and older women. The American Heart Association is
on a mission to eradicate this myth and educate people so they may
understand that heart disease is actually the leading cause of death in
women of all ages. The good news is awareness can be a bold prevention
tool.
“Red Hatters have strong, powerful voices,” says Debra Granich, CEO of
the Red Hat Society. “It’s time to use those voices to educate the
world, raise awareness of heart disease and save lives. We are an
organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and this is one
way we can come together for a common cause.”
The upbeat group urges members living in all countries to gather
together on this day and spread the red word to their friends, their
mothers, their sisters, and their daughters. Red Hatters are encouraged
to come up with colorful ideas to elevate the understanding of the
disease to their friends, family and loved ones.

FREMONT — Sohiela Afnani has good reason to fear for the lives of seven fellow Bahais about to face trial in Iran. The country has a long history of persecuting members of the Bahai Faith, and executing its leaders, including Afnanis father, Nusratullah Subhani, she said. Subhani was hanged in 1985 after being convicted of spying for Israel and being an enemy of Islam — essentially the same charges that five Bahai men and two women are scheduled to be tried on Sunday in an Iranian court, Afnani said. They already have been in jail nearly two years. She and other Bahai leaders are holding a public forum and prayer vigil Sunday to coincide with the trial.
